The Thurrock tip

Linford recycling centre: what it lets in and what it turns away

Grays residents use Linford Household Waste and Recycling Centre on Buckingham Hill Road, SS17 0PP. Thurrock Council's rules, as published on 15 October 2026, are stricter on vehicles than most:

  • Ford Transit, Luton and tipper vans, flatbeds, minibuses and anything over 3.5 tonnes are banned at all times.
  • Vehicles with trailers may only enter on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
  • Small vans and single axle trailers under 1.8m need a permit, allowing up to 6 visits a year. Allow 14 working days for it.
  • Hire vehicles are limited to 2 visits a year.
  • Commercial waste is not allowed. The council says disposing of it at Linford is illegal.

Cars need no booking, just proof of address. For a boot full of bags, Linford works well. For anything that needs a bigger vehicle, check the list above first.

Pricing

How a Grays price is worked out

Every job is priced from what you send us. Rubble and soil are the biggest swing: a tonne bag of broken brick weighs far more than a sofa that fills the same space, and tipping is charged by weight. Furniture, bags and household clutter are mostly about volume.

Grays is further from our Theydon Bois base than the Epping Forest towns, so tell us about any other rubbish you want gone at the same time. It is better for you to have it all done in 1 visit. See how loads are priced on the prices page.

What we take

What we take away in Grays, and how to book

Loads from a hired van

If a hired Transit or Luton has been refused at Linford, we can take the rubbish off your hands instead.

Trailer loads midweek

Thurrock Council lets trailers into Linford on Tuesdays and Thursdays only (read on 15 October 2026). If yours is loaded on a Saturday, call us.

Tonne bags of rubble

Thurrock Council's bulky collection refuses tonne bags (as published on 15 October 2026). We load rubble, hardcore and soil straight from the bag.

More than 8 items

Thurrock Council caps each bulky booking at 8 items (as published on 15 October 2026). We take a full room, or a full house, in 1 go.

Flats near the river

Grays sits on the north bank of the Thames. For flats with lifts, stairs or long corridors, we do the carrying.

Kitchen and bathroom refits

Old units, a bath, tiles and plasterboard from your own refit, loaded together with the packaging.

A familiar problem

A hired Transit, loaded and turned away

It happens like this. You hire a Transit for the weekend, fill it with an old bed, a broken wardrobe, carpet and 15 bags from the loft, and drive to Linford. Thurrock Council bans Ford Transits at all times, so the van does not get in, and the hire clock is still running.

Ring us before you hire anything. We load straight from your house or drive, so there is no van to hire, no permit to apply for and no wasted trip. If you have already loaded a hire van, send a photo and we will tell you what we can do.

Thurrock Council

The council bulky collection in Grays, and its limits

Thurrock Council runs a paid bulky waste collection. As published on 15 October 2026, it costs £44 for 1, 2 or 3 items and £12 for each item after that, up to 8 items per booking, paid when you book. Items go out by 6am, and the council notes that bookings are often made well in advance.

It takes a wide range: furniture, electricals, doors, worktops, kitchen and bathroom units, and carpet up to 10ft by 8ft. What it will not take is tonne or hippo bags, commercial items, or loose rubble and foliage unless securely bagged, and garden waste and rubble are limited to 4 bags per item.

For a few pieces of furniture with time to wait, that is a fair deal. We are the better call for heavy rubble, more than 8 items, or a job that needs doing on a date that suits you.

On the day

How the job runs in Grays

  1. 1

    Check against the photos

We look over the load with you and confirm it matches what you sent before anything is lifted.

  2. 2

    Heavy bags first

Rubble and soil go in low and first, then furniture and lighter bags on top, so the van is loaded safely.

  3. 3

    Drive and path cleared

We sweep away the grit and dust that rubble leaves behind, so the drive looks as it did before the pile.

Your responsibility

Checking who takes your rubbish

A cheap collector who dumps your rubbish in a Thurrock lane can leave you answerable for it. Section 34(2A) of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 puts a duty on householders to take reasonable steps to check that anyone other than the council who removes their waste is authorised to.

In practice that means 1 question and 1 search. Ask for the waste carrier registration number, then look it up on the Environment Agency public register and check the name matches. Do it before the van is loaded, whoever you book, including us. Type in CBDU525129 and our record comes up. Businesses also need a waste transfer note for each load.
