If you have unwanted furniture in Harlow, you have 4 real options: give it away for reuse, book Harlow Council's bulky waste collection, take it to the recycling centre at Temple Bank yourself, or have a clearance firm carry it out and take it in 1 visit. Which one suits depends on the state of the furniture, how much there is, whether any of it is upholstered and whether you can get it downstairs. This guide goes through each route as it works in Harlow today, with the council's own charges and rules, so you can pick the cheapest one that actually fits your load.
A solid wardrobe, a dining table in good order or a chest of drawers with all its handles still has a life ahead of it. Before you pay anyone to take it away, it is worth seeing if someone will collect it for free.
Harlow Council points residents to ECCO, a local charity that runs a reuse scheme. You call ECCO on 01279 444 244 or fill in its online reuse form, and the council says ECCO will contact you within 7 working days. If the items can be reused, ECCO collects them for free and sells them in its charity shops, with the profits put back into the local area. The council lists Freecycle, Freegle, Preloved and local selling groups as other routes.
St Clare Hospice also runs a free furniture collection across CM17, CM18, CM19 and CM20, along with Epping Forest and the East Hertfordshire border. It takes sofas and armchairs, dining tables and chairs, wardrobes, chests of drawers, dressing tables and good bookcases. There are 2 conditions worth knowing before you book:
Reuse charities are the right first call for furniture that is clean, whole and labelled. They are not set up for a broken bed frame, a stained mattress or a sofa the dog has had a go at. That furniture needs one of the routes below.
Harlow Council collects bulky household items for a fee you pay when you book. As published on Harlow Council's bulky waste page, read on 1 November 2026, the charges are:
Small electrical items and textiles carry no collection fee, however many you book. Furniture, white goods and mattresses are all on the council's list.
Upholstered seating is where the cost and the planning change. On top of the band above, the council adds £10 per item for seating up to a 2 seater sofa, £20 per item up to a 3 or 4 seater, £30 per item up to a 5 or 6 seater and £3 per small upholstered item such as cushions and padded headboards. The council's own example is a 2 seater and a 3 seater sofa together, which comes to £65.50.
The council also says it can no longer collect upholstered items alongside other bulky waste. On collection day the sofas and armchairs have to be kept apart from the rest, and different items may be collected separately, possibly on different dates. You book online through the council's self service page and put the items out on the day you have booked.
We would rather tell you straight: for a small, simple load the council is often the cheaper option. Say you have a fridge, a bedside table and 2 dining chairs, all downstairs and easy to carry to the front. That is 4 items in the first band, with no upholstered fee, and you can put them out yourself. Book the council.
The council route starts to creak when:
That is when a rubbish clearance in Harlow, done in 1 visit, usually makes more sense. Our Harlow rubbish removal page sets the council's charges beside how we price a load, so you can compare like for like.
Harlow is well placed for the tip. Harlow Recycling Centre is at Temple Bank, CM20 2DY, and it is one of the Essex County Council sites that accepts vans, pick ups and large trailers. If you have a van or a big trailer and a free morning, it is a real option.

A few rules catch people out, as read on the Love Essex site on 1 November 2026:
The tip's big advantage is that you work to your own timetable. The cost is your time and your back. A 3 seater sofa, a double wardrobe and a mattress will not go in a hatchback, and getting them down a flight of communal stairs on your own is how people get hurt.
When we clear furniture in Harlow, the job runs the same way each time. You send a few photos of what is going and tell us your postcode and whether anything is upstairs. We come back to you with a price for the whole load, before anyone turns up.
On the day we arrive at the agreed time, check the load matches the photos and carry everything out ourselves. Upholstered pieces go in the same van as the tables, beds and wardrobes, so there is no second booking and nothing needs keeping apart on your drive. If a wardrobe or a corner sofa will not fit through a door, we take it apart first. We protect door frames and stair rails on the way down and sweep up inside and on the path before we leave.

We cover every neighbourhood in CM17, CM18, CM19 and CM20, coming up from our base in Theydon Bois near Epping. Flats and maisonettes are no trouble: we carry along walkways and down shared stairs and keep the communal areas clear for neighbours while we work.
Our price is for the load, not per item. We look at how much of the van it fills, how heavy it is, anything that needs handling on its own and how far it is from the room to the road. A sofa is part of that price, not an extra on top. Our rubbish removal prices page explains how a price is built in more detail.
Take a fairly typical Harlow job. A family is moving and leaving behind a 3 seater sofa, 2 armchairs, a dining table with 6 chairs, a sideboard and a TV unit.
Through the council, that is 12 items, so the £77.50 band. The 3 seater adds £20 and each armchair adds £10, so the upholstered extras come to £40 and the total to £117.50, based on the charges published on the council page. The sofa and armchairs also have to be kept apart from the rest and may come on a different day, so the furniture could sit in the front garden across 2 collections.
Through the reuse charities, the dining table, chairs and sideboard might well go for free if they are in good order. The sofa and armchairs only go if every piece still carries its fire label.
Through us, it is 1 visit with everything carried out and loaded together. Send the same photos to us and to the council's booking page, set the figures side by side and choose what suits you. If some of it is good enough for St Clare or ECCO, give that away first and send us photos of what is left.
Whichever route you choose, the law puts a duty on you as well. The waste duty of care code of practice on GOV.UK says householders must take all reasonable measures to make sure their household waste only goes to an authorised person. In practice that means asking anyone other than the council for their waste carrier number and checking it on the Environment Agency public register before anything is loaded.
It takes a minute and it protects you. If furniture you paid someone to take turns up dumped on a verge and is traced back to your address, the council can fine you for not checking. Our waste carrier number is CBDU525129, so you can look us up first.
Harlow Council says it can no longer collect upholstered items alongside other bulky waste, so they are kept apart on the day and charged an extra fee by size. When we clear a house or flat, upholstered furniture travels in the same van as the rest and is priced as part of the load.
Possibly. St Clare Hospice collects sofas and armchairs for free across Harlow, but every soft furnishing must carry its fire label and be in a condition the shops can sell. If the label has been cut off or the sofa is worn through, it will need disposal instead.
Yes. Furniture, bags, a broken shed and the clippings from the back garden can all go on the same van. Mention everything in your photos so the price covers the whole load.
No. We carry it out from wherever it is, including upstairs flats and back bedrooms. Make sure we can get in, and tell us about any stairs, lifts or parking limits when you send the photos.
Take a few photos of the furniture, add your Harlow postcode and say whether any of it is upstairs. Send them through our quote form or on WhatsApp to 07834 527 855, and we will come back to you with a price for the job. If it is a bigger move with more than furniture to go, our household rubbish removal page covers the rest of what we take from homes.
